Following hot on the heels of the fiery Ford Ranger Raptor we told you about recently, is a slightly different version of Ford's market-leading pickup. Where the Raptor is all about power and go-anywhere performance, this one is a much more subtle and refined mode of transport. Representing the pinnacle of the on-road range is the new Ford Ranger Platinum.

Order books are already open, with production and first deliveries scheduled for the spring so, if you're about to lease a new vehicle this could be the one for you.

The Platinum version is the high-spec model sitting at the top of the next-generation Ford Ranger line-up. Yes, it's a pickup. But it's a pickup with exclusive exterior details and a stylish, leather-trimmed interior.

It's a pickup, but a sumptuous pickup

Ford's most luxurious Ranger comes in five-seat, double-cab specification and sets a new standard for luxury in a pickup. The interior blends a refined wood and leather-clad finish with the latest technology. The driver and front passenger relax into perforated and quilted leather seats with 10-way power adjustment, heating and cooling functions, and stylish contrast stitching. Dark maple wood textures give a hint of opulence, and sophisticated ambient interior lighting helps create a sense of calm in the cabin.

The high-tech part comes from the dual 12-inch screens; a full digital cluster replaces the traditional gauges ahead of the driver, alongside a portrait touchscreen controlling the infotainment system. The Ranger Platinum also features an eight-speaker B&O audio system and wireless device charging as standard. The whole lot is also capable of being updated over-the-air so it's only going to be improved over time as well.

The exterior of the Platinum builds on the muscular and functional styling of the Ford Ranger family but with a little added sophistication.

A unique grille and new silk chrome finish for the exterior highlights deliver a striking first impression. Sitting on 20-inch alloy wheels with high-gloss ebony detailing doesn't do the looks any harm either. Further premium touches include a soft-close tailgate, privacy glass and daytime running lights within the matrix LED headlamps. The standard roof rails add a purposeful look and extra practicality as well.

Despite the refined touches, the Ranger Platinum is still a practical and versatile vehicle.

Ford's powerful 240bhp, 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel packs plenty of power for effortless cruising and enough torque to be capable of towing 3.5 tonnes. The power runs through a 10-speed automatic gearbox before being delivered to all four wheels via the electronically controlled all-wheel drive system. It might be clad in leather and chrome but the Ranger Platinum is just as capable as the rest of the Ranger line-up.

The Ford Ranger is a market-leading pickup right across Europe and has helped set the standard for performance, versatility, and capability in the segment. Now Ford has added a touch of luxury to the mix the Platinum is squarely aimed at people who want the comfort and technology of a high-end car, but with the toughness and productivity of a pickup.
