Every now and again someone, somewhere comes up with a brilliantly simple idea that for some reason hadn’t been thought of before. Fire; the wheel; paperclips; sliced bread; that sort of thing. We’re surrounded by stuff that is so common and everyday we forget that there’s an actual person behind the brilliant idea. We may never know exactly who suggested taking a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and turning it into a commercial vehicle, but that person is a genius.

You’ve done your supermarket shop, navigated your way through the checkouts, and forced the wonky wheels on your trolley to go in the only direction they seem determined to avoid. You finally make it back to the car only to see some inconsiderate clown has decided to use the side of your car as a doorstop and left a lovely little souvenir in your immaculate paintwork.

Pick-up trucks are no longer the beasts of burden they once were. It’s taken some time but the American notion of a pick-up as a recreational vehicle rather than a utilitarian workhorse appears to have finally made it to the UK.

The list of required items for driving abroad seems to get longer every year. Alongside the passports, the shorts and t-shirts, the flip-flops and beach towels, the inflatable flamingo and the kitchen sink, you also need to make sure you have a GB sticker, green card, breathalyser, spare bulbs, headlight deflectors, high-viz jackets, warning triangle, and a first aid kit. It’s no wonder that people forget about the VE103B.
