Mercedes introduces the new A-Class Saloon

New Launches

If you've always fancied driving a Mercedes but you have no need for a big saloon then the latest A-Class hatchback is your best bet. Or is it? What if you don't want a hatchback?

The A-Class has been around for 20 years now and has evolved into one of the most highly rated compact cars on the market. Now Mercedes has applied all that experience of building premium saloons and applied it to a compact car to create the new A-Class Saloon.

You can get all of the virtues of the latest A-Class - efficient engines, excellent safety features, and beautiful interiors - but stretched out into a stylish saloon.

As you might expect from Mercedes it is very stylish indeed. Low bonnet, slimline headlights, short overhangs front and rear, and the desirable star in the centre of the grille, all mean the A-Class saloon will stand out from the crowd when it's launched towards the end of this year. As well as giving it an air of sportiness the sleek look also serves the purpose of reducing drag to improve economy without compromising on interior space.

The contemporary look is carried into the interior of the new A-Class saloon. Don't expect to find the dials tucked away under a neat little hood, that would be too obvious. The dashboard sweeps right across the width of the car to create a feeling of space while the instruments are displayed on a stand alone screen.

The free-standing cockpit - as Mercedes is calling it - is available in three options with either two 7-inch displays, two 10-inch displays, or one of each size. The result is a bright and airy cabin that doesn't feel cluttered and is easy to use. Clever use of ambient lighting adds to the “free-floating” look of the interior.

When it's launched later this year the new A-Class saloon will only be available with two engine options, one petrol and one diesel, but we wouldn't expect that to remain the case for very long.

The initial models will be the A200 offering 163bhp and the 116bhp A180d. Both will be fitted with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The petrol A200 should return around 53mpg and 120g/km while the diesel offers around 65mpg and 110g/km.

Details, and more importantly, prices, are yet to be announced but we'd be surprised if the A-Class saloon doesn't turn out to be highly desirable. It's packed full of safety equipment, features Mercedes new MBUX multimedia system - which is excellent - and a whole host of technology that can track the car, help you find a space in a multi-storey car, and even find the nearest petrol station and tell you how much the fuel costs before you get there.

The new A-Class saloon will be presented to the general public for the first time at the Paris Motor Show (4 to 14 October 2018) before production starts early 2019. That may seem like a long time from now but it will be here before you know it so if you're interested let us know and we'll make sure you're one of the first to drive away in the latest Mercedes-Benz.
