Audi A4 Goes Back to Black

 Published 14th July 2017
New Launches

AUDI has long been expert on finding new niches to fill in the car market but this time they've gone back to an old favourite.

The Audi range may have been simplified recently but that doesn't mean they can't introduce a range-topping trim option for the ever popular A4.

The Black Edition has been around before and proved popular so now it's been offered on the new A4 Saloon and Avant - estate to us lesser mortals - to provide a more purposeful air. It's available as an option across the full A4 engine range, from the entry-level 150bhp 1.4 TFSI right up to the most powerful 270bhp V6 TDI Quattro.

Designed to make the car stand out the Black Edition is unashamedly aggressive so it won't be to everyone's taste. 19-inch alloy wheels in a matt titanium finish are complemented with titanium black mirror housings, single frame grille and window surrounds, side skirts, rear spoiler, and air intakes.

The shape of the boot means the Avant doesn't get the rear spoiler but you do get black roof rails instead so you won't feel left out if you prefer the more practical estate. Both models get privacy glass in the rear windows and acoustic glass in the front to further reduce cabin noise.

Not that an A4 has a noisy cabin in the first place but the additional quiet should make ‘in-transit' conference calls that little bit easier. Other interior changes include a new flat-bottomed multi-function steering wheel and piano black inlays that reflect the exterior design.

The A4 Black Edition is available to lease now in both saloon and estate versions. Both look fantastic although you should expect to see a slight difference in cost for the Avant to reflect the slightly higher list price. The Black Edition overall may carry a small premium in terms of company car tax rates due to the higher list price, but in terms of emissions and fuel economy it offers the same reasonable rate of return as the current models.

The range-topping Black Edition has star billing in the new A4 range but if you are looking for something a little more understated there are also a number of detail alterations that benefit everyone choosing the SE specification and upwards.

If you don't fancy the more aggressive look of the Black Edition there are plenty of other A4s to choose from and all now come with updated trim levels and option packs.

Audi's simplified range features cruise control and rear parking sensors as part of the standard specification and all versions of the A4 will now feature Audi connect Safety & Service for emergency calls and service requests too.

Sport models will get an upgraded multi-function steering wheel and larger touchscreen, heated front seats, and Twin Leather upholstery. S line models will lose their cloth/leather combination upholstery and replace it with a leather and Alcantara mix for the newly added heated seats.

The Technology Pack has been enhanced to include the brilliant Audi virtual cockpit and Audi Phone Box with wireless charging. Touchscreen navigation and the full suite of Audi connect infotainment services are also included in the revised pack.

An updated Comfort and Sound Pack replaces the previous options, and depending on the chosen model offers either front parking sensors or a reversing camera, hill hold assist, a BOSE or Bang & Olufsen sound system and either heated front seats or the advanced key keyless access system.

Not only do these changes make it even more tempting to opt for an Audi on your next lease, the opportunities for smug one-upmanship are vastly improved too.

If you're in the mood for winding up your colleagues you should seriously consider opting for the new ‘Audi Beam' feature that projects the four rings via LEDs onto the ground whenever the car is parked and the front doors are opened. On RS models, the projection changes to the Audi Sport logo.

Yes, it's utterly pointless but sometimes that's exactly the point. Even if you don't opt for the fancy lighting you still get to drive home in an Audi A4 and it's always nice to commute in style.
