BMW 5 Series enters electric era
BMW has revealed that the forthcoming eighth-generation 5 Series will be available as a pure-electric model for the first time in the shape of the i5.
When the saloon is revealed in a few months time, BMW's popular executive model will be offered with a familiar choice of engines, including plug-in hybrid, petrol, and diesel, as well as a Touring estate version coming in 2024.
However, the launch of a new all-electric model, sitting above the i4 saloon, has been confirmed at the BMW Group Annual Conference by chairman Oliver Zipse - and that the i5 will not be short on power.
Zipse said: “The all-electric BMW i4 M50 shows how BMW blends dynamic performance and electric mobility to perfection. It was the best-selling BMW M model worldwide in 2022. A fully electric performance version from BMW M GmbH will also be included in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan line-up.”
The electric treatment will also be given to the i5 Touring, also available next year, but the i5 should be launched in October 2023, with an early summer reveal scheduled. Further details will be announced closer to launch.
But for businesses waiting for a mid-size executive premium saloon, the new BMW i5 will be brilliant for company executives thanks to its low 2% benefit in kind rating.
