Cupra Leon gets an expanded engine range

General Guides  New Launches

Hands up who fancies the idea of leasing a practical hatchback with great looks and a nice healthy dose of performance? Yup, thought so.

It's not quite in the hot hatch bracket but with two new engine options the Cupra Leon is a great choice for both family and fun.

Cupra used to be the performance arm of Spanish car maker, SEAT. Launched as a standalone brand in 2018 it's now another brilliant string to the VW Group's bow.

Cupra is now expanding the Leon range with two new choices of petrol engine to deliver even greater value for discerning drivers. This will also bring the available engine choices more in line with the coupe-like Formentor SUV.

Currently, the Leon is available with a 2.0-litre petrol engine that produces either 245bhp or 300bhp depending on specification. From the beginning of October, you'll be able to tone down the power and choose something a little more restrained too.

Not that restrained is really the right word.

Both the Leon five-door hatchback and estate will be available with a 1.5-litre TSI 150bhp petrol engine and a 190bhp version of the 2.0-litre engine. The 1.5-litre option will be available with both manual and automatic gearboxes, while the 190bhp unit will be available exclusively with the DSG-auto gearbox, just like its more powerful siblings.

The newest additions to the Leon family will also introduce a generously equipped V1 trim level.

Standard equipment will include 18 inch machined sport black and silver alloy wheels, LED headlight and taillights, a 12 inch infotainment system with navigation and full link smartphone integration, Cupra drive profile selection, keyless entry and start, Predictive and Adaptive Cruise Control, and to complete the sporty look, a rear diffuser with twin exhaust pipes.

UK orders for the new variants of the Leon range will open from early October. Initially you'll be able to order the Leon five-door 1.5-litre 150PS DSG-auto V1, with the other variants to follow soon after.

So, if your lease is up for renewal soon make sure you add the Cupra Leon to your list of possibilities.
