Five family cars to lease in 2026
Published 23rd February 2026
When you start looking for a new car to lease it quickly becomes obvious just how much variety is out there. That’s why breaking the UK car market down into lots of different segments is so useful for narrowing down your choice. Despite the depth of variety, there is one segment (well, technically it’s two segments) that utterly dominates our roads: the “family car”.
When you think of the average family car, it’s highly likely you’re going to be thinking of either a hatchback or an SUV/Crossover. While they are defined as two different segments, between them they represent the most popular choice by quite some distance.
Even the most ardent petrolhead will acknowledge that the car is first and foremost a vital tool for daily life.
Forgive us for stating the obvious, but we all know that means commuting to work, school runs, supermarket trips, weekend visits, family holidays, bored kids on long journeys, teenage taxis, and memories of past journeys tucked away in cubbyholes that you never seem to get around to clearing out. The family car needs to be flexible, practical, hard-wearing, reliable, efficient, cost-effective, and more importantly, it needs to be a place you don’t mind spending a lot of time sitting in.
It’s no wonder that the most popular choice is either a hatchback or crossover. And if you’re trying to decide which family car you should be leasing, a list of some of the most popular options others have already chosen might be a useful place to start.
It looks like today is your lucky day…

Honda Civic
The winner of the What Car? Family Car of the Year 2026 is probably a good place to start. The Honda Civic is widely regarded as one of the best family hatchbacks in the UK, offering a balance of efficiency, practicality, and driving engagement.
The current (11th generation) Civic is a petrol-electric hybrid (e:HEV), its 2.0-litre petrol/hybrid powertrain producing a sporty driving experience while remaining comfortable and quiet on long motorway journeys. It also achieves an average of around 58mpg, ticking the efficiency box as well.
It’s got a larger boot than many of its rivals, the cabin is comfortable and well designed with quality materials, and it boasts some of the latest safety and driver assistance systems in its segment. The Honda Civic is available in three trim levels – Elegance, Sport, and Advance. Standard equipment includes heated front seats, 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and the full "Honda Sensing" safety suite. If you move up the range, you can add larger wheels, a heated steering wheel, panoramic roof, and a 12-speaker Bose sound system.
And for good measure, as well as the Civic being voted family car of the year, Honda also took home the Reliability Award. Check out the range of Honda Civics to lease here.

Kia Sportage
The Kia Sportage is one of the UK’s best-selling SUVs, recently refreshed for 2025 with a "Star Map" lighting design and a simplified three-tier range. Described in some reviews as “flawless”, it offers a spacious and well-equipped interior, huge boot, and a wide range of petrol and petrol-hybrid engine options.
The simplified model range consists of Pure, GT-Line, and GT-Line S trims. The entry-level model includes twin 12.3-inch screens, LED headlights, and 17-inch alloys as standard. GT-Line adds a sportier body kit, 18 or 19-inch alloys, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The top-spec model features a panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon sound system, powered tailgate, and ventilated front seats.
The Kia Sportage offers a choice of efficient petrol, full hybrid (HEV), and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains. It should go without saying that the plug-in is the best option in terms of efficiency, offering an electric-only range of 43 miles that should easily cover the average commute. Even if you opt for one of the other powertrains, you should still be looking at between 40 and 50mpg. Choose the Kia Sportage you want to lease here.

Nissan Qashqai
The Nissan Qashqai is the original crossover, and the car that invented the segment is still a UK bestseller known for its comfortable and refined ride. If you’re looking for practicality, it’s hard to go wrong with the large boot space and rear doors that open to a wide 85-degree angle, which is particularly useful for those in the child seat phase of parenting.
Standard equipment across the three trim levels includes 17-inch alloys, a rear-view camera, and dual-zone climate control. You can add other equipment such as a 12.3-inch Google-integrated infotainment system, 360-degree camera, ProPILOT driver assistance, a Bose sound system, and massaging quilted leather seats.
The Qashqai's standout feature is Nissan’s e-Power hybrid system, which uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine as a generator to power an electric motor that drives the wheels. It provides the instant torque of an electric vehicle without the need to plug in, generates 201 bhp for a 0-62 mph time of 7.6 seconds, and Nissan reports the updated version in the latest models can achieve up to 62.8 mpg and a range of over 700 miles on a single tank. What’s more, Nissan Qashqai leasing rates are very competitive.

Smart #5
The Smart #5 is a relatively new option but one worth keeping an eye on. It’s an all-electric mid-size SUV that offers a spacious interior, an official range of up to 366 miles, rapid charging capabilities, and extensive standard equipment.
The Smart #5 aims to blend rugged SUV styling with a premium, tech-laden interior. It offers a generous 630-litre boot capacity, expandable to 1,530 litres with the rear seats folded, and a useful 72-litre "frunk" for additional storage. The cabin features a standard 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13-inch OLED central touchscreen. Premium trims add a second 13-inch passenger screen and an augmented reality head-up display, heated electric front seats, a panoramic 'Halo' roof, and powered tailgate.
The Smart #5 is available with a choice of three power options, a 74kWh and two 94kWh battery packs. The smaller battery is still enough to generate 335bhp, sprint to 62mph in under 7 seconds, and offer a range of up to 288 miles. If you opt for one of the more powerful versions, you could be looking at as much as 637bhp, sub-4 second sprints, and a range of up to 366 miles. It also uses an advanced 800-volt electrical architecture, allowing for 400kW fast-charging and impressive charging speeds of 10%-80% in as little as 18 minutes – but only on the 94kWh versions. Choose the lease you want for the Smart #5 here.

Ford Focus
If the Smart represents the new, the Ford Focus would be the more traditional choice, but only if you move quickly. No longer in production, the car that is still regarded as “king of the corners” remains a joy to drive, but availability is starting to run low so this could be your last chance to lease the Ford Focus.
Even as it bows out, the Focus remains a great choice for those who want the thrill of the drive without sacrificing space for the kids. It’s spacious and practical, comfortable and well-equipped, and the 1.0-litre EcoBoost mild-hybrid powertrain offers a good balance of punchy performance and 50+ mpg efficiency.
The most popular choice is either the ST-Line or ST-Line X. It looks sporty, sits slightly lower, and has slightly stiffer suspension to let you feel what the wheels are doing. Or if you prefer a more rugged look, Active and Active X models offer a slightly raised ride height and plastic cladding to cushion the bodywork when tackling Himalayan speed bumps or a little light off-roading. And all of them features the massive 13.2-inch SYNC 4 touchscreen, which includes wireless smartphone connectivity as standard.
