Upgraded 2026 Volvo EX90 now even faster
Published 5th November 2025
Volvo’s premium SUV, the EX90, is now faster. Not faster in the way you might think - after all how quick does a seven-seater need to be?
But the 2026 version of the EX90 is packed full of improvements and upgrades even though not much is noticeably different.
The Volvo EX90 is still available with a choice of single or dual-motor powertrains, still offers a battery range of around 380 miles on a single charge, still comes with loads of storage space, and is still available in a choice of trim level.
What has changed is largely hidden beneath the surface, and it includes a new 800-volt electric system for faster charging, and a core computer upgrade that enables new and improved safety, collision avoidance, and driver support features.
Volvo EX90 upgrades speed of charging
In terms of charging, the updated EX90 now features Volvo’s most advanced EV architecture.
Compared to the outgoing model’s 400V system, the new 800V system helps to reduce heat generation during charging, and cooler batteries charge more efficiently. Alongside a clever new software tweak to the battery management that works in tandem with the new hardware, charging times are now significantly faster than before, adding around 150 miles of range in as little as 10 minutes.
On top of that, the new 800V technology allowed Volvo to shave some weight as well as deliver more power to the wheels for quicker acceleration. Despite its size, the updated EX90 is more than capable of hitting 62mph in under 5 seconds.
There’s a quicker on-board computer, too
Although, those of you with an interest in computing might be more impressed with the upgrade to a 500 TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second) core computer powered by dual processors. The additional computing power is not only useful for over the air updates to the EX90’s infotainment system, battery management software, and so on, but it also means Volvo can introduce a host of new features.
These include connected safety alerts for slippery roads, hazards ahead, and accidents ahead, as well as automatic e-call functionality. That last safety system also includes an Emergency Stop Assist (ESA) function designed to bring the car to a controlled stop in its lane if the driver fails to respond to attention or hands-off warnings, for example due to sudden illness.
Slightly less worrisome than being taken ill at the wheel but certainly more useful in daily life, other new features also include expanded automatic emergency steering functionality in darkness, along with Park Pilot assist for parallel parking. The updated Volvo EX90 also adds an electrochromic panoramic roof that lets you adjust the glass transparency at the touch of a button.
And if that wasn’t enough, it’s still a Volvo - so if you lease the latest model year EX90 you get a whole load of reliability, design, and comfort to go with the latest technology. And charging speed.
