Euro NCAP reveals safest vans of 2022
Independent safety body Euro NCAP has announced the safety ratings for the latest LCVs available in 2022 if you are considering leasing a commercial vehicle this year.
Ranked on crash test safety, as well as active safety systems such as crash avoidance fitment and performance, the results show a slow but steady improvement. Several vans have seen improved equipment levels since 2021's models, and systems perform better than before too.
This year's results have seen the Fiat Ducato become the first van to achieve Euro NCAP's top Platinum rating. Four other models have achieved a Gold rating, and only one van is classed as Not Recommended.
Last year's results, says Euro NCAP, highlighted the poor levels of safety equipment fitted to commercial vehicles. As LCVs are used throughout the day, often covering large mileages, safety for both the driver and other road users is important should they be involved in a collision.
For 2022's release, Euro NCAP revisited 19 vans, covering the majority of commercial vans sold in Europe. One van assessed - the Nissan Interstar (formerly NV400) - was rated as ‘Not Recommended', as opposed to five last year.
The Interstar's twin, Renault's Master, has Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) fitted, so is in a higher category, while improvements for its stablemate, the Renault Trafic, have seen it jump up to the silver category - the most improved LCV for 2022.
The new Fiat Ducato is the clear winner however, claiming the top spot on this year's list. With a bronze ranking last year, a significant upgrading of safety equipment includes an advanced sensor set, and AEB pedestrian and cyclist systems.
Unfortunately, the other Stellantis vehicles with which the Ducato shares its platform – the Peugeot Boxer, Citroen Relay, and Opel Movano - did not get the same equipment upgrade and remain in lower medal positions than the Fiat counterpart.
