First details of new electric Range Rover

 Published 4th December 2023

For owners of small businesses and SME firms, this must be one of the cars you have been eagerly waiting for: the all-electric Range Rover.

That epitome of luxury motoring with excellent off-road ability now has an electric drivetrain. Which means you can benefit from all of that plus incredibly low benefit in kind taxation.

According to Range Rover, its engineers are on target to create the quietest and most refined Range Rover ever with what the company calls a unique active road noise cancellation configuration and sound design to provide serene modern luxury motoring thanks to its electric underpinnings.

The car features 800v architecture which means fast charging capability when you re-charge the battery, although no details yet on exactly how quick that will be.

Thomas Müller, Executive Director of Product Engineering at JLR, said

“We are on target to create the quietest and most refined Range Rover ever created.

“The magic ingredients that underpin the success of Range Rover remain unchanged: timeless, reductionist design, a serene cabin and go-anywhere capability – but now offered with zero tailpipe emissions.”

Prototype cars are currently undergoing global on-road testing from the cold of Sweden to the heat of Dubai, with temperatures ranging from -40C to +50C.

Range Rover says the testing programme has been adapted for Range Rover’s first fully electric vehicle to ensure robustness of the electric drive system, including its underfloor, battery durability, chassis integrity and vehicle dynamics tests for thermal derating.

The new Range Rover will be built in the United Kingdom, on the flexible Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) in Solihull, alongside existing mild and plug-in hybrid Range Rover vehicles. For the first time, batteries and EDUs will be built and assembled at JLR’s new Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton, not far from the Gateway2Lease headquarters.
