Volkswagen ID. Polo: the iconic small car goes all-electric
Published 25th May 2026
If you’re looking for an example of a successful car, more than 20 million Polos have been sold since the original launched in the 1970s. Expect that number to keep climbing too, because the humble Polo is about to enter a new era. Recently unveiled to a waiting world, the brand-new Volkswagen ID. Polo is an all-electric reboot of one of the most recognisable names in the small-car world.
With a maximum range of around 282 miles, and a cabin packed with tech normally found in larger models, the VW ID. Polo is shaping up to be one of the most important compact EVs of the year.
Design-wise, the ID. Polo is the first production model to fully adopt VW’s new Pure Positive design language. The look is clean, modern and deliberately timeless, with crisp surfacing, a friendly front end, and a powerful rear. There’s even a subtle nod to the original Golf in the C-pillar shape.
Despite being similar in length to the regular petrol Polo, the new ID. Polo is also noticeably more spacious thanks to its EV-specific layout. It offers room for five adults and a boot that’s grown by 25% to a very practical 441 litres. Fold the rear seats and that capacity rises to 1,240 litres, making it far more versatile than the traditional “small car” label might imply.
Inside, the same design philosophy continues with a bright, uncluttered cabin, high-quality materials, and a focus on intuitive operation.
A 10-inch Digital Cockpit sits directly in the driver’s eyeline, while the new 13-inch Innovision infotainment screen takes centre stage. Physical buttons also make a return for key functions, a welcome move for anyone who found the touch-sensitive sliders of previous ID models a bit too fiddly.
The ID. Polo also brings big-car tech into the small-car segment.
The optional Connected Travel Assist function can manage steering and speed on motorways and even react to traffic lights, while standard one-pedal driving makes urban journeys smoother and more efficient. Higher trims add features such as intelligent LED matrix headlights, illuminated exterior elements, background lighting, heated seats and steering wheel, and an upgraded version of VW’s ID. Light system that now extends into the doors for a brighter interior feel.
Volkswagen says the new ID. Polo is “much more than a city car” though, and the numbers actually back that up.

Designed around VW’s latest MEB+ platform, three powertrain options will be available for the new ID. Polo, 85 kW, 99 kW, and 155 kW, with power outputs ranging from around 115bhp all the way up to a very healthy 210bhp. These are paired with one of two battery sizes. The first two variants use a 37kWh battery offering around 204 miles of range, while the range-topping 155kW model gets a 52kWh battery capable of the full 280+ mile range.
With those kinds of numbers for power output and battery range, the new VW ID. Polo is definitely capable of being much more than just a “city car”.
All three versions also support DC rapid charging as standard, with a regular 10–80% charge taking around 23–24 minutes depending on the battery. Vehicle-to-load capability is also standard, allowing the ID. Polo to power external devices up to 3.6 kW, whether that’s charging an e-bike, powering camping kit, or just keeping your laptop battery topped up.
In terms of the model lineup, three trim levels have been offered in Germany at launch — Trend, Life, and Style. UK specifications are expected to be very similar, and they are due to be confirmed soon.
Trend models come with LED headlights, DC fast charging, Lane Assist, and a full digital cockpit as standard. Life adds adaptive cruise control, a reversing camera, and wireless phone charging. Style tops the range with its matrix headlights, 3D LED taillights, sport comfort seats, two-zone climate control, and enhanced interior lighting.
Optional extras include a Harman Kardon sound system, a panoramic glass roof, and even a pneumatic massage function for the front seats. That’s the kind of luxury-class feature you wouldn’t usually expect to find in a compact EV.
The VW Polo has always been a dependable, sensible, quietly brilliant little car. The new all-electric ID. Polo keeps that spirit alive, just with more space, more tech, and zero tailpipe emissions. It’s a big step forward for one of the nation’s most popular badges, and a sign that the electric small-car market is about to get a lot more interesting.
Pre-sales for the brand-new Volkswagen ID. Polo have already begun in Germany, with UK order books expected to open shortly.
Full specification and pricing for the UK market will be announced closer to the launch date, but if Volkswagen can keep the ID. Polo competitively priced, it could become one of the most appealing small EVs of the year for both private and business leasing customers.
