Volkswagen has launched its next-generation Amarok, with the German pick-up expected to continue the old model's success.

Featuring a range of new engines and significantly improved equipment levels, the Amarok pick-up also features new styling and benefits from VW's work with Ford on commercial vehicles.

In a market that has seen a number of competitors, such as Mercedes Benz and Mitsubishi, pull out in recent times, the VW Amarok will look to capture premium customers.

Depending on individual markets, VW will offer two body styles from launch - a single or double cab - and there are up to four diesels and a petrol engine to choose from.

The range-topping model will be the 3.0 litre V6 TDI diesel. Best-selling models are likely to come with a 2.0 litre, four cylinder diesel, which will produce a little over 200hp depending on the market.

Drive will go through a standard 10-speed automatic gearbox on high-end models, though entry level models will have the choice of a six-speed auto. Manuals will come in either five- or six-speed guises. All-wheel drive in the shape of VW's 4Motion system is fitted as standard to all models.

The redesigned Amarok is larger than the outgoing version, both longer and wider than before, for both improved interior space and a more flexible load bed.

A standard Euro pallet can fit in the bed of all models, and the single-cab's bed can fit two loaded sideways. Payload is now rated at up to 1.16 tonnes, and there's a towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes.

Technology improvements bring six driving profiles to help in low grip/off-road areas, and there are up to 20 different driver assistance systems fitted. A large portrait touchscreen system dominates the interior, combining with digital instruments, but Volkswagen has also ensured there are plenty of physical controls for ease of use while driving.

The new Volkswagen Amarok is expected to arrive in early 2023, with UK pricing and specifications announced closer to launch. As soon as we know leasing rates, we'll have them in our pick-up truck leasing section.
