General Guides  New Launches

If you're thinking of leasing a practical, family car there is a recently announced option you need to be aware of. It comes in the shape of the new Peugeot 308 and 308 SW range. The European Car of the Year Finalist and Women's World Car of the Year is now available to order in the UK.

Both models feature Peugeot's latest design tweaks and next generation interiors, plus new features to choose from.

At the front, the new 308 and 308 SW are the first models to feature Peugeot's new logo: a roaring lion's head which also cleverly houses the radar sensors used by the autonomous driving aids. Angular headlights and a wide grille give the new 308 range a solid and purposeful look.

Inside you'll find Peugeot's next-generation i-Cockpit with a new compact multi-function steering wheel and a 10-inch HD colour touchscreen that houses a new infotainment system. Also new for the 308 are the customisable controls (Allure trim or above) that allow you to set personalised shortcuts for different functions. Both models can also be specified with heated front seats with 10-way electric adjustment and a multi-point massage system.

New 308 and 308 SW models will now come standard with a number of safety and driver assistance technologies, including automatic emergency braking, intelligent speed adaptation, lane keeping technology, programmable cruise control, and driver attention warning system. All of which points to the ability to include self-driving systems in the future.

For the first time, both models are available from launch with efficient plug-in hybrid powertrains: Hybrid 180 and Hybrid 225. It's a safe bet the number refers to the bhp, and it's an equally safe bet these will be the most popular choice of engine configuration.

Both feature a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and are powered by a 12.4kWh battery connected to an 81kW electric motor. In terms of economy the Hybrid 180 offers up to 37 miles of electric running from a single charge and is also eligible for a low 8% benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax rate if you're leasing for business use. If you're not leasing for business it is still going to be the best choice for a good balance of performance and running costs.

It can also be fully recharged using a 7.4kWh wall box in just 3 hrs 50 mins. The optional charger can reduce this to 1 hr 55 mins.

The other engine options are the 1.2-litre PureTech petrol and 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel engines, both with 130bhp.

Fully electric variants will follow in 2023.
