Updated Mazda CX-5 adds more reasons to choose one

A mid-size SUV is one of the most popular choices for lease drivers today. It's also a crowded marketplace with a lot of options to choose from. As far as Mazda is concerned it's also the sector that accounts for more than 20% of their European sales. That explains why the Mazda CX-5 has just been given quite a significant upgrade for 2022 to help it stand out against its rivals.

The full details of the range will be revealed over the autumn, but we already know the 2022 Mazda CX-5 introduces driving mode selection, enhanced driving dynamics, new styling, practical improvements, and an expanded range of safety features.

The front of the updated CX-5 features a new three-dimensional grille and wing design that creates a more dynamic look. Both front and rear light clusters have also been restyled, and there's a new exterior colour, Zircon Sand, added to the options list. Three new model grades have been announced, each incorporating subtle differences to define their characters.

The CX-5 Newground sounds a bit like the off-roady version and features a silver underguard accent on the front and rear bumpers and door garnishes, black door mirrors, lime green accents to the front grille and 17 inch silver or 19 inch black alloy wheels. The interior combines suede upholstery with lime green stitching and air-conditioning louvres. Presumably to bring a touch of the outdoors into the cabin.

Sport Black boasts a gloss black finish on the front grille and bumpers, wheel arches, door garnishes and door mirrors. This is definitely the one with the more urban look. The 19 inch alloy wheels are finished in black metallic paint, and the front grille incorporates red accents. Red stitching trims the black leather seats, steering wheel, gear shift lever and door panels. Anything finished in red and black is guaranteed to be the sporty version.

Based on what we know so far it won't come as a surprise that the GT Sport is more about refinement. It combines a one-colour exterior which highlights the dynamic shape of the car, enhanced by the brilliant gloss paint of the bright silver 19 inch alloy wheels. The interior features smooth Nappa leather and the luxurious textures of genuine woodgrain to create a pleasant and comfortable place to sit and while away the hours.

2022 Mazda CX-5

The interior of the 2022 CX-5 has also been improved

The car now includes a wireless Qi phone charging tray in the centre console so you can do away with messy cables. At the rear, the floorboard and the tailgate sill are on the same level to make it easy to load and unload the boot, and to add to the off-road credentials, Newground models also feature a reversible floorboard with a water-resistant side to protect it from wet or dirty items such as children and dogs.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 has had a few tweaks under the skin too. It now includes Mazda's Mi-Drive system, which enables the driver to select the most appropriate drive mode with one touch of a switch. Opt for one of the grades fitted with i-Activ all-wheel drive and you also get an off-road mode to play with for increased traction and stability. Further improvements to the bodyshell, suspension and seats are also designed to enhance ride comfort. Road noise has also been greatly reduced to create a more peaceful atmosphere inside the car.

The updated CX-5's range of safety systems has also expanded. The front LED headlights have been improved to give finer control over light distribution so you can see more easily at night. Mazda has also added a Cruising & Traffic Support system to the CX-5 which assists with accelerator, brake pedal and steering when stuck in traffic jams.

As we said further up the page, details of the full 2022 Mazda CX-5 range and pricing will be announced this autumn, but you can definitely expect it to be affordably priced to appeal to a wide range of drivers. We'd expect first deliveries to be taking place early 2022 so if your lease is due for renewal soon it might be worth checking out the new CX-5 .
