Volkswagen teases the ID.X Performance. Now it just needs to build it

Concept cars are a strange...concept. It's essentially a case of “here's a car that looks amazing, is packed with loads of exciting new technology, and we're not going to make it.” It's all one big tease that lets the car makers show off how clever and artistic they are, and then they just go back to building another regular old car. Which is why every single one of you need to write an email and beg for the Volkswagen ID.X to go into production.

Volkswagen recently presented this vision of an all-electric sports limousine with powerful all-wheel drive, performance-oriented suspension, and a glorious appearance. Now it's up to all of us to persuade them to actually put it into production.

Designed around the MEB modular platform, under the skin the ID.X is essentially an enhanced and improved version of the upcoming ID.7. VW is aiming to redefine the performance of electric mobility with the new all-electric ID.7. The fully electric fastback combines high range, fast charging, ample space, and intuitive operation that will become the new premium standard when it goes on sale.

The Volkswagen ID.X concept takes all of that and turns it up to 11.

Andreas Reckewerth, Head of Technology Office MEB, and his team have created the show car on the basis of the new ID.7. He says: “The MEB offers many fantastic possibilities for approaching vehicle development with a great deal of creativity. It was clear to us that we wanted to base our new show car on the ID.7 and that we would focus on enhancing the performance. In this way we can show what is possible.”

The exterior of the all-electric ID.X limousine has a host of sporty features. Both the front splitter and rear diffuser are made of carbon and the sports suspension has been stiffened with new springs and lowered by 60mm. This makes it much more agile and also improves the overall performance. A carbon-fibre wing on the rear adds the necessary downforce to keep it stable and the 20-inch wheels are fitted with tyres wide enough to keep it firmly planted on the road. On the inside you'll find carbon bucket seats to hold you in place as you hurtle towards the horizon in total silence.

To complement the incredible looks and fulfil the performance potential VW opted to go with a powerful dual-motor drive in the ID.X concept.

The standard ID.7 motor on the rear axle has been supplemented with an additional asynchronous motor on the front axle to create an all-wheel drive car that boasts a whopping 550bhp. That's supercar levels of power, and when it's combined with the short-time power boost function VW installed it should equate to a 0-60mph time that will blow your mind in a big, luxurious limousine. The vehicle dynamics system also manages the locking differential on the rear axle for truly sporty performance.

It probably goes without saying that the ID.X would be an expensive bit of kit if VW decided to actually put it into production. We don't care. It looks amazing, it promises to be immensely powerful, and it would look absolutely glorious parked outside of your house waiting for you to take it for another spin around the block just for the sake of it.

In the meantime, less sporty versions of the standard ID.7 are available to lease from us!
