VW integrates ChatGPT into vehicles

New Launches

Volkswagen is the first carmaker to integrate ChatGPT into its cars in a major change to how drivers interact with vehicles.

The new capability will be offered as part of the infotainment systems in the ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, and new variants of the Tiguan, Passat and Golf, which was revealed at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas (USA).

It can be used to control functions including infotainment, navigation and air conditioning, or to ask for general information.

ChatGPT uses artificial intelligence to understand natural language and independently carry out complex tasks. Users don’t need to learn specific words; they just make a request and the system can understand.

It can also find solutions to questions, supply vehicle-specific information and offer suggestions, such as itineraries at a destination.

The voice assistant is activated by saying: “Hello IDA,” or pressing the button on the steering wheel. IDA automatically prioritises whether a vehicle function should be executed, a destination searched, or the temperature adjusted. If the request cannot be answered by the Volkswagen system, it is anonymously processed through AI to find the answer.

The new Volkswagen Golf will feature ChatGPT capability as part of its infotainment system.

Executives at VW emphasise that no vehicle data is shared, while information about questions or answers is deleted immediately.

ChatGPT has already had a major impact on the world of business since it became widely available last year.

Users of the online tool can ask the chatbot almost anything and it will be able to provide a coherent answer in conversational language, ranging from composing business letters to planning events or writing reports on specialist subjects.

ChatGPT author Open AI has also created DALL·E 2, an AI system that can transform a user’s description into almost any image.
