What Happens at the End of Your Lease?

Reaching the end of your car lease is an exciting time – it’s your chance to decide what’s next. Whether you’re ready for a new vehicle or planning to return your lease car, the process is simple, clear, and fully supported every step of the way with Gateway2Lease.

Here’s what typically happens when your lease agreement comes to an end.

We’ll get in touch before your lease ends

A few months before your contract finishes, we’ll reach out to remind you that your lease is coming to an end. This gives you plenty of time to explore your next options – whether that’s returning your vehicle or choosing something brand new from our latest car lease deals.

Deciding what you’d like to do next

When your lease agreement ends, you’ll usually have two simple choices:

  • Return your lease car – you can hand your vehicle back at the end of the contract. The finance provider will arrange a convenient date for collection and inspection, usually free of charge. Please note that your collection is not automatically booked in to coincide with your contract end date.

  • Lease a new vehicle – Browse our latest leasing offers and search all available vehicles to line up your next vehicle for delivery after your current one is collected.

  • Extend your current lease – some funders offer short-term extensions. This can be useful if you’re waiting for a new vehicle to arrive or just need a little more time.

Preparing for collection

Before your lease car is collected, it’s worth taking a few moments to make sure everything’s in good order. This helps the collection process run smoothly and avoids any unexpected charges.

Here’s a quick checklist to guide you:

  • Give the car a clean inside and out
  • Remove any personal items and paperwork
  • Check for damage outside of normal wear and tear
  • Ensure tyres are legal and evenly worn
  • Top up fluids if needed (washer fluid, oil, etc.)
  • Gather all keys, handbooks, and accessories (like charging cables or parcel shelves)

All inspections are carried out according to the BVRLA Fair Wear and Tear guidelines, which set out what’s considered reasonable for a used vehicle. For a more detailed breakdown, take a look at our Fair Wear and Tear Guide.

Final checks and paperwork

If you’ve exceeded your agreed mileage allowance, you may see a small excess mileage charge, as detailed in your lease agreement. Once your car has been collected and checked, your lease will officially end – and you’re free to move on to your next vehicle.

Looking ahead

The end of your lease is also the start of your next driving chapter. Whether you’re thinking about going electric, switching to a family SUV, or downsizing to something compact and efficient, we’ll help you find your perfect next lease car.
