Company cars for essential users

 Published 3rd October 2020
Company Fleet

If your business runs company cars for essential users, then you might be left rather nonplussed by the raft of electric vehicle (EV) announcements.

Do EVs really work for an essential user? What about charging up the battery en route? What happens to the range when you put a big box of tools and spares in the boot? We're sure these are the sort of questions you are asking.

The answer might just lie in the MG5 EV Estate which MG Motor UK is launching in October. With a starting price of under £25k before the plug-in car grant, a 600 litre boot capacity in a traditional estate car style and a range of 215 miles on a charge, could this possibly be the answer?

“Estate cars have been critical cars for the fleet provider and brilliantly practical for families at the weekend,” says Rob Marshall, operations director at Gateway2Lease.

“So while many manufacturers have still to launch an EV, or are preparing different types of SUV propositions, here's MG with the second full EV in its range. And one that should be ideal for the business needs driver.

“Nevertheless, we do understand that such businesses need to transition to electric fleets in an orderly and timely fashion. And that not all electric vehicles are either available or suitable right now. So what choice is there if you need a good company car now? We've been digging around some of our leasing special offers to bring you a range of suggestions. I hope this may help your company find the correct business car that's required today.”

The vehicles we have chosen are all in stock now. That means they can be ordered and delivered swiftly. Have a look and see what would work for your company.

Kia XCeed 1.6 GDI Phev 139 3 DCT

Kia XCeed PHEV

  • Leasing profile 3+35
  • Mileage 20,000 miles per year
  • Cost to lease £278.44 + VAT
  • Company car tax @ 20% £51 per month

The Kia XCeed is a plug-in electric hybrid model providing a range of 30 miles in zero emission mode. Drivers can top up the battery at home using a three-pin socket or have a home charger installed. The battery helps the car eke out an impressive 200mpg (official) if the zero emission battery is used a lot. But for most high mileage drivers we would expect around 70mpg - that's diesel-like economy for a petrol car.

Volkswagen Golf 8 2.0 TDI 150 7speed R-Line DSG

VW Golf

  • Leasing profile 3+35
  • Mileage 20,000 miles per year
  • Cost to lease £312.27 + VAT
  • Company car tax @ 20% £148 per month

This is the all-new Volkswagen Golf 8. While the new all-electric ID.3 hatchback laps up the limelight, the latest Golf gets on with doing the job - and that's being a Golf: classy, dependable, good to drive and smart to look at. It's a diesel, and rather unforgivable from VW for a new car, the diesel is not RDE2 compliant, so there is no 4% discount on benefit in kind tax. Nevertheless, the car does a great job for most business drivers, especially in this auto version - expect the mpg to be around the 55-60 mark.

Here's a great example of a company car that's available now, only costs £114 in tax per month, and a leasing rate at around the £250 mark before VAT. There's a punchy petrol engine that is rated at 50mpg and you also get the full dose of impeccable Audi engineering plus the new angular exterior styling appearance that gives the latest A3 more road presence.

Ford Puma 1.0 EcoBoost 125 Titanium

Ford Puma

  • Leasing profile 3+35
  • Mileage 20,000 miles per year
  • Cost to lease £207.63 + VAT
  • Company car tax @ 20% £99 per month

We think this is the company car ‘find' in our list - the Ford Puma. The Puma is Ford's new compact SUV / crossover model, which looks cracking, offers a great leasing price and highly affordable benefit in kind company car tax of just £99 a month. What's more, as it's a Ford and based on the Fiesta, you also get a terrific car to drive, with the softer Titanium spec suspension allowing the car to waft over ruts and bumps. Add in the thrummy three-cylinder turbo engine and you have a cracking drive.
