BYD Atto 2 DM-I brings 18 years of hybrid evolution to the UK

Published 20th April 2026

If you’re considering a plug-in hybrid lease in 2026, your timing couldn’t be any better if you tried. BYD — now the world’s biggest producer of plug-in hybrid vehicles — is celebrating 18 years of development and constant improvement in its Dual Mode (DM) technology. And you could be reaping all of the benefits that experience has to offer, with the new BYD Atto 2 DM-i about to enter the UK’s ultra-competitive compact SUV market.

You may be surprised to learn that BYD’s plug-in hybrid story started long before most manufacturers even believed electrification would take off.

Back in 2008, when the industry was still debating whether plug-in hybrids were a niche experiment, BYD turned up at the Geneva Motor Show with the F3DM — the world’s first mass-produced PHEV. It wasn’t glamorous by any stretch of the imagination, but it was groundbreaking. A 16kWh battery, 37 miles of electric range, and a total range of 280 miles were unheard of at the time.

That early start has definitely paid off.

Fast-forward to today and BYD has produced more than 7.7 million plug-in hybrids, becoming the global leader in the segment. The company now employs over a million people worldwide, including more than 110,000 engineers, and generates patents at a rate most tech firms can only dream of. This isn’t a brand dabbling in electrification — it’s one that built its identity around it.

Changing the plug-in hybrid story

The journey from the F3DM to the latest DM-i system isn’t just a list of mechanical upgrades either; it’s a steady refinement of how a plug-in hybrid should work in the real world. For example, early models needed more than seven hours to recharge, whereas today, the Atto 2 DM-i uses BYD’s Blade Battery that can charge from 30% to 80% in just 26 minutes.

The underlying philosophy has changed too.

Unlike many PHEVs where the petrol engine does most of the work, BYD’s DM-i system prioritises electric drive. The 1.5-litre Xiaoyun engine mainly acts as a generator, only stepping in directly at higher speeds or under heavy load. That means the vast majority of everyday journeys can be completed in EV mode, which is exactly what plug-in hybrids are supposed to be able to do.

This approach has already delivered impressive results in BYD’s larger UK models. The Sealion 5 DM-i offers up to 631 miles of combined range, the Seal U DM-i stretches that number to 699 miles, and the Seal 6 DM-i can reach a truly remarkable 935 miles before grinding to a fuel-starved halt.

The latest BYD PHEV - the Atto 2 DM-i

And all of that experience is now heading for the compact SUV segment in the shape of the new Atto 2 DM-i, which lands in UK showrooms in May. For drivers looking at their next lease, this is the most accessible way into BYD’s plug-in hybrid technology so far.

The BYD Atto 2 DM-i offers an electric-only range of up to 56 miles, which is more than enough for most daily commutes, and a total range of up to 621 miles when the petrol engine and battery work together. That blend of long-distance capability and lower running costs are exactly the sort of attributes most of us would prioritise in a new car.

Inside, BYD has ensured it punches above its weight, giving it a spacious cabin, generous standard equipment, integrated Google connectivity, and the same calm, tech-focused design language seen in its larger models. It feels more premium than you’d expect from a compact PHEV, which is very much the point.

When it arrives, the Atto 2 DM-i will give BYD one of the most comprehensive PHEV lineups on the market. Each model uses the same core DM-i philosophy but applying specific goals for different needs, from compact commuting to long-distance touring.

That breadth of choice matters.

Whether you want a compact SUV, a large family car, or something with serious range, BYD now has a plug-in hybrid option that prioritises electric driving alongside the familiar convenience of traditional petrol and diesel cars.

Eighteen years after the F3DM quietly rewrote the rulebook, BYD’s plug-in hybrid technology has matured into one of the most efficient systems on the market. The Atto 2 DM-i is merely the latest chapter in that story — and for drivers considering a PHEV lease, it might be one of the most compelling new arrivals of the year.
