New BYD Dolphin G DM-i is shaking up the supermini segment
Published 29th June 2026
The BYD Dolphin G DM-i is about to land in Europe, and it’s already shaping up to be one of the most intriguing new arrivals in the supermini class. BYD has been expanding at breakneck speed across Europe, but this is the first time the brand has developed a car specifically for overseas markets rather than adapting or exporting an existing Chinese-market model.
The result is a compact hatchback designed from the ground up to appeal to European tastes, with the added twist of being the only plug-in hybrid supermini on sale.
At 4.16 metres long and 1.825 metres wide, the Dolphin G DM-i sits right in the heart of the supermini segment. Give or take a couple of centimetres, it’s basically the same length as a VW Polo or Renault Clio, although the BYD is a touch wider than many of its rivals, which should translate into a bit more shoulder room inside.
On the subject of the inside, BYD hasn’t released official images yet, but spy shots circulating online hint at a clean, minimalist cabin with a floating central touchscreen, compact digital driver display, and a new three-spoke steering wheel with physical controls. The accuracy of that assessment remains to be seen, but the layout does look very similar to that found in the all-electric Dolphin Surf and common sense – aka, cost-efficient production - suggests BYD are likely to stick with the same modern, tech-focused interior design language.
What really sets the new Dolphin G DM-I apart is its powertrain. We’re still waiting for confirmation of the full technical specification yet, but early reports suggest it’s closely related to the hybrid setup used in the Atto 2 DM-i.
That means a 1.5-litre petrol engine working mainly as a generator, paired with a front-mounted electric motor expected to produce around 194bhp. The emphasis is on delivering an EV-like driving experience, with smooth, quiet acceleration and the petrol engine only stepping in when needed. BYD’s Super Hybrid with DM technology gives it the ability to cover daily commutes on electricity alone, while still offering the long-distance flexibility of a petrol engine.
Over 60 miles on the battery alone
The headline figure is the combined range. BYD says the Dolphin G DM-i can travel more than 621 miles on a full charge and a full tank, which is an extraordinary number for a car of this size. It’s a level of long-distance capability that no other supermini currently offers, and it could make the Dolphin G DM-i a compelling option for drivers who want the benefits of electric motoring without the range anxiety.
It will also travel over 60 miles on the battery, offering brilliant around twon zero emission driving.
As with the technical details, the pricing structure also remains unconfirmed, but the educated guesses are suggesting the Dolphin G DM-i will carry a list price that sits somewhere between £20,000 and £23,000.
If that proves accurate, it will make it one of the most affordable plug-in hybrids in the UK, giving BYD a unique advantage in a segment where most rivals are still petrol-only. If you’re a lease customer looking to minimise costs over the entire duration of the contract, this is probably as close to a no-brainer as it gets.
The BYD Dolphin G DM-i will go on sale across Europe later this month, with first deliveries expected by late summer or early autumn. Full equipment levels and technical specifications will follow closer to launch, but even at this early stage, it’s clear that BYD is aiming to redefine what a compact car can offer in the electric era.
A supermini with meaningful EV range, long-distance hybrid flexibility, and genuinely accessible pricing is something the market hasn’t seen before, and it could make the Dolphin G DM-i one of the most important new models in BYD’s European strategy.
