Audi A2 e-tron sets a new efficiency benchmark

Audi A2 e-tron sets a new efficiency benchmark

Published 25th August 2026

Audi is preparing to launch a new compact EV later this year, and it’s already shaping up to be one of the most efficient electric cars on the market. In fact, Audi says it’s the most efficient model it has ever built. The upcoming Audi A2 e-tron will sit at the entry point of the brand’s electric range, even though its headline figures are anything but entry level.

Delivering around 4.85 miles per kWh when fitted with the optional efficiency package (that means it’s highly efficient), for leasing customers, that translates into lower running costs, longer range from a smaller battery, and an EV that’s been engineered to squeeze the most out of every kilowatt.

The A2 e-tron’s shape plays a big part in that efficiency, with its drag coefficient of 0.24 making it the slipperiest compact Audi yet.

Audi has leaned heavily into the streamlined design, with a rounded front end, flowing roofline and sharply defined rear that help the car cut through the air more cleanly than a typical fastback. Details like air curtains, gap reducers and an active cool-air intake all work to calm airflow around the front and wheel arches, reducing turbulence and improving range.

The car in our pictures is a disguised pre-production model - and not the sort of paint finish you can expect when the A2 becomes available to elase!

The A2’s streamlined bodywork isn’t just for efficiency though.

It gives the car a neat, contemporary look that fits well within Audi’s current design language. The rounded nose, smooth roofline and crisp rear end give it a distinctive profile, while the aerodynamic detailing around the wheel arches adds a subtle flair. It’s a compact EV that looks purposeful without being fussy, and its shape directly contributes to its standout efficiency figures.

Under the skin, the A2 e-tron uses a 140kW (190bhp) electric motor designed specifically for efficiency.

Audi has reworked the power electronics, motor and transmission to improve performance in everyday driving. Together, these changes make the drive system up to 10% more efficient than previous setups, helping the A2 e-tron deliver strong real-world range without needing an oversized battery.

Speaking of batteries, the A2 e-tron uses a 61kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack, chosen for its durability, safety and everyday usability. LFP cells age more slowly, don’t rely on rare earth materials, and can be charged to 100% routinely without harming longevity. Audi says the pack achieves 89.6% charging efficiency at a wallbox, thanks to an adapted cooling strategy and smart thermal management.

The A2 e-tron will also support bidirectional charging, allowing drivers to power external (Vehicle-to-Load) or use the car as a home energy storage system. It’s a feature that’s becoming increasingly relevant as more households adopt solar panels and home energy management systems, and it adds an extra layer of practicality to Audi’s smallest EV.

Audi A2 to be revealed in the autumn

Audi will unveil the full A2 e-tron later in autumn 2026, with more details on range, pricing and equipment to follow.

But even at this early stage, it’s clear what the car is designed to be: a highly efficient, easy-to-live-with electric hatchback that prioritises low running costs, everyday usability and smart engineering.

For drivers looking for a compact EV that makes the most of every charge, the new Audi A2 e-tron is shaping up to be one of the most interesting new lease options of the year.

Once the Audi A2 e-tron goes on sale we’ll have some of the keenest leasing rates on the market available.
