Volkswagen ID. Cross: first look at VW’s newest compact electric SUV

Volkswagen has officially pulled the covers off the all-new ID. Cross, a compact electric SUV that aims to bring premium-class quality to one of the most competitive segments in the UK market. With its world premiere taking place in Wolfsburg and advance sales already underway in Germany, the ID. Cross is shaping up to be one of the most important additions to Volkswagen’s growing electric family. And if you’re thinking about leasing your next car, this is one you’ll want to keep firmly on your radar.

The ID. Cross arrives with a simple promise: premium feel and everyday usability at a price that won’t make your eyes water. Volkswagen expects the starting figure to sit at around €27,995, which should translate to a competitive UK price once local details are confirmed (around £24,500). For leasing customers, that should translate into some very compelling deals.

It’s compact, measuring just over 4.1 metres long, but it carries itself with the confident proportions of a larger SUV. The new Pure Positive design gives it a clean, friendly appearance, with an elongated roofline and distinctive light signatures front and rear. Specify the IQ.Light LED matrix headlights and 3D LED rear lights and the ID. Cross takes on a more premium look, complete with illuminated VW logos that add a touch of theatre without tipping into gimmick territory.

Practicality is another strong point. The ID. Cross offers seating for five and a generous 475-litre boot, which is 20 litres more than the petrol-powered T-Cross. There’s even a small 25-litre frunk under the bonnet, ideal for storing charging cables or smaller items you don’t want to hear rolling around in the main boot. For families, commuters and business drivers alike, that extra flexibility is always welcome.

The cabin is filled with fabric-covered surfaces, tactile controls and high-quality materials that feel more luxury-leaning than you might expect at this price point. The layout is simple and intuitive, with the Digital Cockpit Pro positioned alongside a large 12.9-inch infotainment display.

One particularly nostalgic touch is the retro instrument mode, which transforms the digital cluster into a Mk1 Golf-style layout, complete with a classic speedometer and a ‘powermeter’ in place of a tachometer. It’s a small detail, but it adds personality to a cabin that already feels thoughtfully designed.

Underneath, the ID. Cross uses the latest evolution of Volkswagen’s MEB platform, known as MEB+. It introduces a new electric motor available in three outputs: 85kW (around 114bhp), 99kW (around 133bhp) and 155kW (around 208bhp). Two battery sizes will be offered, 37kWh and 52kWh, with the larger pack delivering a reported range of up to 427 kilometres, which translates to roughly 265 miles.

Charging performance is equally competitive. The smaller battery can charge from 10% to 80% in around 23 minutes at up to 90kW, while the larger pack supports up to 105kW and completes the same charge in around 24 minutes. For everyday use, that means quick top-ups and predictable charging stops.

Connected Travel Assist is available as an option, offering adaptive assistance that can respond to traffic lights and adjust speed accordingly. One Pedal Driving is included, allowing the car to slow itself smoothly using only the accelerator pedal thanks to the benefits of regenerative braking.

Parking technology has taken a step forward too, with features such as Area View and Park Assist Pro, the latter capable of performing fully automatic parking manoeuvres and even remote parking via smartphone in certain markets.

ID. Cross trim levels follow a familiar Volkswagen structure

The Trend model serves as the entry point, offering generous standard equipment including DC fast charging. The Life trim adds features such as larger alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control and a rear-view camera, while the Style trim introduces premium lighting, heated seats, personalised interior elements and keyless entry.

Optional extras include a Harman Kardon sound system, a panoramic roof and even pneumatic massage seats, which is not something you normally associate with compact SUVs.
