End of Van Lease: What You Need to Know

End of Van Lease: What You Need to Know

Your van lease is coming to an end – so, what happens next? Whether you’re running a business fleet or leasing a single work van, it’s worth knowing exactly what to expect. At Gateway2Lease, we keep things simple, helping your wrap up your agreement smoothly and plan your next move with confidence.

We’ll contact you in advance

Before your lease ends, we’ll reach out to remind you that your contract is approaching its final date. This gives you time to review your options, decide what you’d like to do next, and avoid any last-minute rush.

Your options at the end of a van lease

When your van leasing agreement finishes, you’ll usually have a few choices:

  • Return your van – hand the vehicle back to the finance provider. A collection and inspection will be arranged at a convenient time for you, usually free of charge. Please remember that collection does not happen automatically on your contract end date and must be arranged separately.

  • Start a new lease – many of our business customers take the opportunity to switch to a new van that suits their needs. You can explore our latest van lease deals to find your next work partner.

  • Request a lease extension – if you’re waiting for a replacement vehicle or simply need more time, some funders may offer short-term extensions. We’ll let you know if this option is available for your agreement.

Preparing your van for return

Before your van is collected, it’s a good idea to carry out a few checks. A bit of preparation helps the inspection quick and straightforward.

Here’s a simple checklist to follow:

  • Give the van a clean inside and out (including the load area)
  • Remove any company signage, stickers, or decals
  • Refit any original equipment or accessories
  • Check for dents, scratches, or interior damage beyond fair wear and tear
  • Ensure tyres are legal and evenly worn
  • Gather both keys, service book, any charging cables (for electric vans)

Inspections follow the BVRLA Fair Wear and Tear guidelines, which outline what’s acceptable for a used commercial vehicle. You can find details in our Fair Wear and Tear Guide.

Mileage and end of lease checks

If you’ve exceeded your agreed mileage, an additional charge will apply, as set out in your lease contract. Once your van has been collected and inspected, the funder will confirm that your agreement has ended – and that’s it, job done.

Planning for your next van

Reaching the end of your lease is also the perfect time to consider what you need next. Whether you’re looking for something larger, more efficient, or want to move into an electric van lease, our friendly team can help you find the right vehicle at the right price.
