MG expands range with new electric MGS6

When a car manufacturer describes a car as “significant”, it can often be taken with a pinch of salt. When the car in question is a brand-new, all-electric compact SUV packed full of equipment and sporting a sub-£40k starting price, it’s probably a “significant” worth taking seriously. With a significant combination of performance, technology, and space, the MGS6 EV is intended to attract a new generation of drivers to the MG brand for the first time.

The MGS6 EV is the eighth all-electric vehicle launched by MG in the UK, and the third model to use MG’s Modular Scalable Platform which delivers dynamic handling and a spacious and comfortable cabin.

This latest addition to the MG line-up is a stylish and contemporary SUV with more than a little functionality built in, including an Active Grille Shutter System at the front, front wheel deflectors, and low air resistance aero wheel covers.

MGS6 appearance takes cues from Cyberster

At the front, the MGS6 EV offers a modern appearance that includes a split grille design inspired by the MG Cyberster convertible. The sleek headlights are integrated into the smooth bodywork, there’s a new daytime running light signature, and the iconic MG badge on the bonnet has a polished silver finish. The rear features an integrated roof spoiler with brake light and a full length central light bar positioned beneath the MG badge.

You can specify the new MGS6 EV in the usual range of MG colour choices - Arctic White, Camden Grey, Cosmic Silver, Dynamic Red, and Pearl Black – along with a new option of Stratford Gold. The look is completed with silver roof rails, privacy glass, and two striking alloy wheel designs.

Choice of three MGS6 EV models

Powered by a 77kWh battery with both rear and all-wheel drive options, the new MGS6 EV is available in three different variants. All three models are also capable of rapid charging from 10% to 80% in a little over 30 minutes.

In line with the rest of MG’s easy-to-follow EV model range, you can choose either:

• the MGS6 EV SE Long Range
• or the MGS6 EV Trophy Long Range.

Both offer a single motor, rear-wheel drive setup, a power output in the region of 240bhp, and a battery range of around 329 miles.

The model lineup is completed by the:

• MGS6 EV Trophy Dual Motor

This ups the power to around 360bhp as well as delivering the additional grip and stability of all wheel-drive. The extra power does come at the expense of battery range, but you should still be looking at around 300 miles from a full charge.

The more awake amongst you may have just noticed that we just mentioned three models but only two trim levels. Powertrain options aside, essentially, you’re choosing between the ‘Long Range’ or ‘Trophy’ trim. Both combine the best possible technology with class-leading ambience, and both offer enough interior space to comfortably accommodate a family of five.

Inside and it’s a welcome return to physical dials

The interior of the new MGS6 EV features physical dials and buttons which are seamlessly integrated into the central console to control main functions like heating, ventilation, and the audio system, and MG has created a multitude of handy storage features throughout the cabin, including a large compartment under the central console. Both front and rear passengers travel in comfort with plenty of leg room, and the lucky ones in the front also get to enjoy heated seats as standard across all three models.

The premium feel continues with the MGS6 EV’s twin screen layout, featuring a floating 12.8 inch HD touchscreen as well as customisable 10.25 inch HD Driver Display with three themes to choose from. MG’s innovative iSMART mobile app ensures you’re always fully connected with your car too, enabling you to find your parked car in unfamiliar car parks, check tyre pressures and available battery range, and pre-heat or cool the cabin ahead of any journey.

And all of that – and much more – can be yours regardless of which model you choose.
