Three key things you need to know about the new BMW i3

Published 12th May 2026

The wraps have been pulled off the new BMW i3, and this time the badge sits on the nose of something far more significant than the compact city car it once belonged to. This is the second model in BMW’s Neue Klasse family and, in effect, the all-electric successor to the long-established 3 Series. It’s engineered around BMW’s most advanced technology to date, capable of more than 550 miles on a single charge, and it’s going to be a massively popular lease choice.

For a brand that built its reputation on driver engagement and long-distance usability, the new BMW i3 is a statement of intent: the 3 Series formula, reimagined for the EV era.

And so, in honour of the legendary status of the 3-Series, here are three big things you need to know about the brand-new BMW i3.

It’s fully electric, and it goes further than almost anything else on the road.

The headline figure is the WLTP range of around 559 miles. That’s not just competitive, it’s transformative, placing the new BMW i3 comfortably ahead of most electric saloons currently on sale in the UK. Charging performance is equally impressive, thanks to its 400kW rapid charging capability adding roughly 248 miles of range in just 10 minutes at a compatible DC charger.

For high-mileage drivers, business users, or anyone who regularly covers long distances, this is the kind of capability that makes an EV feel genuinely effortless. It’s also a major step towards BMW’s goal of making electric mobility as convenient as petrol.

The launch model, the i3 50 xDrive, uses dual motors to deliver its 469bhp to all four wheels. BMW hasn’t quoted performance figures yet but given the output and the instant torque delivery of electric motors, it’s safe to assume the new i3 will also be very quick.

It’s packed with BMW’s most advanced technology ever, inside and out.

The i3 isn’t just a new electric saloon, it’s the debut of BMW’s new digital era. At the core of the car is a completely re-engineered electronics platform built around four high-performance computers. Each one handles a different area — driving dynamics, automated driving, infotainment, and comfort systems — and together they offer up to 20 times more processing power than anything BMW has used before. This is the foundation for everything from smoother braking to more intelligent driver assistance.

Inside, the cabin is dominated by the BMW Panoramic iDrive, a new interface designed to keep the driver’s eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. Instead of a traditional instrument cluster, key information is projected across the lower edge of the windscreen via Panoramic Vision, stretching from pillar to pillar. This is complemented by a 17.9-inch central display, an optional 3D head-up display, and a new multifunction steering wheel with “Shy Tech” controls that only illuminate when needed.

Voice control takes a major leap forward too, allowing for more natural, conversational interactions. It can learn routines, anticipate needs, and respond to complex requests, and it also integrates seamlessly with Amazon’s Alexa+ for access to cloud-based services. Over-the-air updates also mean the system will keep evolving long after your new i3 leaves the factory.

It’s still unmistakably a BMW 3 Series, just reinvented for the EV age.

For all the new tech, the i3 remains instantly recognisable as a BMW saloon, which is exactly what many drivers are looking for. The proportions feature the classic 3 Series long wheelbase, short overhangs, sloping roofline, and a planted, rear-biased stance. BMW calls it a “modern 2.5-box design”, but the DNA is unmistakable. This is the spiritual successor to one of the brand’s most iconic models, and it wears that heritage proudly.

The front end introduces the new Neue Klasse face, with a horizontal kidney grille, slim twin headlights, and a shark-nose profile that points enthusiastically into the corners. The rear features wide shoulders, flared arches, and L-shaped taillights that stretch deep into the bodywork, emphasising the car’s width and stance. It’s clean, confident, and most importantly, unmistakably a BMW.

The interior blends modern minimalism with traditional BMW driver focus. The wrap-around interior design and expansive glass areas create a bright, airy space that feels like a natural evolution of the 3 Series driver-centric cabin philosophy. And be in no doubt, when you bury your right foot into the carpet, it will behave like a BMW should too.

The new BMW i3 is more than just the next step in BMW’s electrification plan, it’s a complete rethinking of what a 3 Series‑sized saloon can be in the EV era. With its huge electric range, cutting‑edge digital architecture, and unmistakably BMW design, it sets a new benchmark for electric performance cars.

For leasing customers who want long‑distance ability, next‑generation tech, and the familiar feel of a proper BMW saloon, the i3 looks set to become one of the most important new models of the year.

Step this way for great BMW i3 leasing deals.
