Volkswagen ID. Cross: A sneak peek at VW’s newest electric SUV

Volkswagen ID. Cross: A sneak peek at VW’s newest electric SUV

Published 28th April 2026

Volkswagen has released the first official preview of the forthcoming ID. Cross — a compact electric SUV that will join the brand’s growing ID family from autumn 2026. Despite only being a teaser ahead of the full reveal, it already gives us a clear sense of what VW is aiming for: a high-quality, everyday-usable EV with a genuinely affordable starting price. And based on what we know so far, there’s an excellent chance you’re going to have to work extra hard to come up with a genuine reason not to lease one.

The new Volkswagen ID. Cross is currently touring Amsterdam in a striking camouflage wrap, giving the public an early glimpse of the brand’s next big step in electric mobility.

The ID. Cross is the first model to showcase Volkswagen’s new “Pure Positive” design language, and camo wrap aside, its overall shape and styling does look good against the distinctive red-brick façade of the Amsterdam Olympic Stadium.

The early images hint at clean lines, balanced proportions, and a more premium, confident stance than the brand’s earlier compact EVs. VW describes the look as deliberately low-key yet self-assured, which feels like a natural evolution from the ID.3 and ID.4. It’s compact, but it doesn’t try too hard — a neat trick in a segment full of shouty styling.

Inside, VW says the cabin has been designed to feel calm, clear, and more upmarket than you might expect at this price point.

Materials and workmanship take inspiration from higher vehicle classes, and the layout focuses on intuitive controls, physical buttons where they matter, and large-format displays. With five seats and efficient use of space, it’s shaping up to be a practical family car that doesn’t feel like a budget compromise.

Volkswagen is offering three power outputs at launch: 85kW, 99kW, and 155kW, which translate to roughly 114bhp, 133bhp, and 208bhp. Two battery sizes will be available — 37kWh and 52kWh — giving lease customers a choice between an urban-focused model and something better suited to regular longer journeys.

Range hasn’t been confirmed yet but based on similar-sized EVs with comparable battery capacities, the smaller pack is likely to deliver something approaching 200 miles in real-world use, while the more powerful 52kWh version should comfortably push beyond 220 miles. Admittedly, these are educated guesses rather than official figures, but they give a reasonable sense of where the ID. Cross will land in terms of daily practicality.

Charging performance is modest but competitive for the compact family SUV segment. The ID. Cross supports DC rapid charging at up to 90 kW, or up to 105 kW with the larger battery. VW also highlights that the charging system is “future-proof”, though we’ll have to wait for the full reveal to find out exactly what that means.

VW ID. Cross - positioned for affordability

The most interesting part of this preview though, is the positioning rather than the specification details of the new ID. Cross.

Volkswagen is clearly aiming to combine compact dimensions, modern tech, generous space, and a noticeably higher level of interior quality — and according to the details provided by VW, all while keeping the entry price around €28,000. Yes, we know that’s the wrong currency, but we’ll be very surprised if the price tag isn’t remarkably close to that number when converted into pound notes. In a market where many EVs are drifting steadily upmarket, the ID. Cross looks set to offer a genuinely strong price-to-quality ratio.

The full reveal is expected later this year, with UK deliveries likely to begin towards the end of 2026.

For now, the ID. Cross feels like exactly the kind of EV Volkswagen needs: practical, polished, and — crucially — attainable. If the production model lives up to the promise of these early teasers, it could become one of the brand’s most important electric cars yet, an assessment that might give its competitors reason to feel more than a little nervous.
