Toyota Aygo X brings full hybrid tech to the city car class

When it comes to choosing a small car, your options are wide, varied, and possibly even a little overwhelming at times. Toyota has now stepped in with something that might make that choice a little more straightforward. Setting a new milestone in the city car A-segment, the new Toyota Aygo X is the first model to introduce full hybrid technology to the small car market.
Combining a fun-filled personality, modern styling, and agile handling, the new Toyota Aygo X also delivers increased power and responsiveness along with some of the lowest CO2 emissions of any car in its class.
The Toyota Aygo X is a one-of-a-kind crossover that has proved incredibly popular since its 2022 introduction. The new model, Toyota’s smallest full hybrid vehicle, makes the efficiency and enjoyment of hybrid driving more accessible than ever before.
The new Aygo X has been updated with an all-new frontal design that creates a premium look that emphasises the rugged crossover stance. Additional beefing-up comes from new 17 or 18-inch machined wheels and black flared wheel arches.
The interior boasts a surprisingly spacious cabin with lots of practical storage. It features the latest touchscreen infotainment, wireless connectivity, premium audio systems, USB-C connections, wireless charging pad, and digital control via the Toyota Smart Connect system and the MyToyota smartphone app. It also comes with Toyota’s latest safety systems including collision detection, road sign assist, and adaptive cruise control.
There’s even a dynamic and sporty new GR Sport grade with tuned suspension and steering – as well as a few GR-specific design touches - joining the Aygo X range for the first time.
But the biggest change is concealed beneath the Aygo X’s compact body.
Small car, hybrid drivetrain
Built on Toyota’s latest small car platform, the Aygo X has been cleverly tweaked to accommodate the same hybrid drivetrain found in the Yaris, but without impacting the Aygo’s overall size, handling, and interior capacity.
The front overhang is just 74mm longer to make room for the 1.5-litre engine. The two stacks of battery cells are laid across the width of the car rather than the length, because they require less space that way. The battery’s cooling system features fans located beneath the front of the rear seats that not only maximise the cabin space but also create two cooling air flows to the battery for efficiency. And the whole lot required an updated wiring system that has also allowed for seemingly unrelated improvements to other features such as air conditioning.
The benefit of adding full hybrid technology to the Toyota Aygo X is to create the ideal car for city driving.
Aygo X hybrid: Over 70mpg fuel economy
Class-leading CO2 emissions of 85g/km, fuel economy is significantly improved to around 76mpg, and an additional 43bhp from the hybrid system makes it more responsive and more comfortable for longer journeys. Being a full hybrid, the new Aygo X also makes all-electric driving possible for extended periods in traffic, with no concerns about when or where the battery can be recharged.
Thanks to hybrid technology, the new Toyota Aygo X delivers more power, sharper acceleration and fun-to-drive handling with no compromise on style, comfort or quality.
The only downside so far is that details of the full UK model range and specifications are yet to be announced. Although, to be fair to Toyota, that’s only a problem if you don’t have the patience to wait for another month or so before leasing the new Aygo X for yourself.
