All-New Toyota Hilux revealed With electric, diesel-hybrid and hydrogen power options

Published 30th December 2025

Toyota has unveiled the ninth-generation Hilux, introducing the model’s first battery electric version and a new 48V diesel mild-hybrid alongside a hydrogen fuel cell variant due in 2028.

The updated line-up gives fleets a broader choice of powertrains while retaining the capability and durability that have made the Hilux one of the world’s most widely used pickups. UK sales begin in June 2026.

Zero-emission Hilux

The headline introduction is the new battery electric Hilux, developed for zero-emission operation without compromising practicality. It uses a 59.2kWh battery and a motor on each axle for all-wheel drive. Pre-homologation figures indicate a range of around 150 miles WLTP, and the truck retains core working attributes including a 715kg payload and 1,600kg towing capacity.

The battery pack has been engineered with extensive underbody protection for off-road use, while features such as Multi-Terrain Select and a 700mm wading depth mirror the diesel model. Toyota says durability testing has focused on ensuring the BEV variant meets the same reliability standards expected of the Hilux in demanding environments.

Diesel beef for Hilux

Alongside the electric model, Toyota has introduced a 2.8-litre 48V mild-hybrid diesel, which is expected to be the most likely choice for UK fleets. The engine delivers a smoother and quieter driving experience at lower speeds, while maintaining key working capabilities including a 1-tonne payload and 3,500kg towing limit. The hybrid system also brings improved efficiency during light-load and stop-start driving, and the diesel model shares the same off-road enhancements and active drive assistance systems as the BEV.

A hydrogen Hilux

Toyota has also confirmed a hydrogen fuel cell Hilux will join the range in 2028, reflecting the company’s multi-path approach to decarbonisation. The fuel cell variant is currently undergoing development and pilot deployment and will offer another zero-emission option for operators needing extended driving range or rapid refuelling.

All versions move to a Double Cab body style and sit on a strengthened chassis with revised suspension. The cabin has been updated with a digital instrument cluster, improved seating and new storage layouts, while Toyota Safety Sense has been expanded with additional driver assistance features. Over-the-air software updates are supported across the range.

With the combination of electric, hybrid and hydrogen options arriving within the same model cycle, Toyota says the new Hilux is designed to future-proof the pickup for a broad mix of users. UK order books for leasing the new Toyota Hilux will open ahead of the model’s arrival in June 2026.
